Brigadeiro recipe, the brazilian chocolate candy that always hits the spot

In Brazil we have a birthday tradition: eat Brigadeiro. Brigadeiro is a tiny chocolate candy ball that tastes like heaven. It’s the sort of sweet that as you eat, brings a smile to your face and makes life’s problems less of a concern for a few minutes.

Every child’s birthday back home requires a batch of these treats and to bring back my wonderful childhood memories I always make some for mine. So last week it wasn’t any different. I made a big batch of brigadeiro since I knew I would have a bunch of hungry Brazilian kids and adults over to celebrate with me.

Brazilian Black Beans – aka Feijoada

Feijoada is one of the most popular dishes in Brazil. It’s a classic and we love it!

Feijoada is a stew made of black beans, beef and pork. In school we learn that the slaves, brought to Brazil by the Portuguese, created Feijoada with the left over meats they’d get from their owners. They used to toss whatever came their way into the beans.

My version of the stew is very flavourful but a bit simpler to make. This is a dish more easily made with a pressure cooker since the beans can take a while to soften. Remember to serve it with rice!

Banana cake with dulce de leche topping

A long weekend calls for special meals shared with friends and family. I invited some of my closest friends over for lunch today so we can share some good times together and re-energize ourselves before the official start of the week.

I had an idea of what I wanted for my main but I wasn’t sure what to prepare for dessert. It occurred to me that I’ve never made a banana cake before. I don’t enjoy peeling a banana and eating it on its own but I do love banana cake and banana bread.

I wanted to try something different so I thought the cake would go well with a dulce de leche topping. This is a new recipe that I just tried for the first time and the original recipe in Portuguese can be found here (I have made minor adjustments so it’s slightly different).

In case you’re wondering, I’m serving this cake today with vanilla ice-cream.

Sunday back home is usually a day spent with family and it’s also a lazy day usually celebrated with pizza. There is a large Italian community in Sao Paulo and we’ve mastered the art of making pizza.

Today I had some friends over and I decided to make homemade pizza to reminisce my weekends growing up. I used the same recipe I have already shared before but this time on top of making savoury pizzas I also tried a dessert one.

Dessert pizzas are very popular in Brazil and you won’t regret serving one covered in chocolate and strawberries. After all, you can never go wrong with such a special combination.

Tomorrow we’re having lunch with the hubby’s parents and my mother-in-law cooks really well. I love her food but lately I have been on a strict diet so I haven’t been enjoying her amazing cooking.

I decided to make a simple cake for the family to enjoy for dessert. If you also want to bring a smile to your mother-in-law’s face, try taking this cake to your next family get together.

2I love coming up with light, healthy and easy to make recipes. I look at the ingredients I have at home and experiment with them.

I made this time a meatloaf for the husband that I’m sure he’ll love. Serve it with whole wheat pasta, brown rice or a nice salad.
